Book Reading with Ayana Mathis

February 24, 2015

In collaboration with the Humana/Centre College Library Speaker Series, the Friends of the Library will host a book reading with author Ayana Mathis on Tuesday, February 24th at 4:00 pm in the Community Room at the Library. This event is free and open to the public.

Mathis' first novel, The Twelve Tribes of Hattie, was a New York Times Bestseller, a 2013 New York Times Notable Book of the Year, an NPR Best Books of 2013, and was chosen by Oprah Winfrey as the second selection for Oprah's Book Club 2.0. The novel tells the story of the children of the Great Migration through the trials of one unforgettable family. It is a story of love and bitterness, and the promise of a new America.

Mathis is a graduate of the Iowa Writers' Workshop and a recipient of the 2014-15 New York Public Library's Cullman Center Fellowship.  She taught Creative Writing at The Writer's Foundry FMA Program at St. Joseph's College, Brooklyn. She is an Assistant Professor of English and Creative Writing at the Iowa Writers' Workshop.

Library to Re-open on Monday

February 22, 2015

The Library will be open to the public on Monday, February 23rd after being closed over the weekend due to storm-related water damage.

Thanks to all of the Library staff who were able to help with the clean-up effort, and a special thank you goes out to Allen, Isai, and Steve for braving the icy water which had pooled up on the roof, breaking up the ice, and clearing the gutters. Their actions helped to limit the damage done to the Library.

While we will be open tomorrow, we're still drying out in some places and some areas will be closed off due to the damage. Most of the Library, however, will be accessible. Our regular programming schedule will also resume. A complete listing of our upcoming events can be found on our Calendar.
