The Boyle County Public Library offers many fun, educational events throughout the year. Weekly programs include a Summer Coding Club on Mondays at 4:00 p.m., and Crafters Who Care on Mondays at 6:00 p.m. In addition to these weekly events, the following Library-sponsored programs are scheduled for this week:


Storytime Break
August 1st-11th

There will be no storytimes offered at the Library August 1 through August 11. Toddler and Preschool storytimes will resume at the Library on August 15th after the two-week hiatus. Homeschool Storytime will resume in September.

 

Color Burst Teddy Bear Workshop
Wednesday, August 2nd at 11:00 a.m.

The Library will host a Color Burst Tie-Dye Teddy Bear Workshop on Wednesday morning. Participants will stuff their own bear, then apply special paint to create a colorful teddy bear. Color Burst Teddy uses a unique bottled paint system which, when applied, creates a tie-dye effect without the mess. This program is for children ages 5-8. Registration is required.


Cookbook Club
Thursday, August 3rd at 6:00 p.m.

On Thursday evening the Library will host the Cookbook Club. Each month will feature a theme. In August the theme is Vegetarian foods. Participants will make and share different recipes with the club. They’ll hear what others liked about the cookbook and the recipe they tried, as well as taste-test samples and discover new recipes. Kentucky Derby Museum Visits the Library
Friday, August 4th at 12:30 and 2:00 p.m.

On Friday, August 4th, the Kentucky Derby Museum will visit the Library to offer two interactive learning programs for kids and tweens. Both programs will be held in the Community Room and are sponsored by the Ephraim McDowell House Museum.

"Mathin' Around the Track" will begin at 12:30 p.m. This program will show participants what it takes to win the Kentucky Derby in this real-world application about math. This event is geared toward students in preschool – 3rd grade, but all are welcome to attend.

"Superhorse, the Shoe, and You" will begin at 2:00 p.m. At this program, participants will explore the athleticism and physiology of a racehorse and jockey, and other factors that go into the making of a champion. This event is geared toward students in 4th-8th grade, but all are welcome to attend.

 

LEGO Club
Friday, August 4th at 4:00 p.m.

The Library will host LEGO Club on Friday, August 4th at 4:00 p.m. in the Storytime Room. The finished LEGO creations will be placed on display in the Children’s Library.

Adult How-To Workshop: Canning Basics
Monday, July 24th at 6:00 p.m.

The Library offers a monthly "How-To" program series for adults where participants can explore the information and skills needed for a new hobby or activity, guided by a local expert. On Monday, the Library will host "Canning Basics," presented by Alethea Price, Family and Consumer Science Extension Agent for Boyle County. Workshop participants will learn the basics of both water bath canning and pressure cooker canning. This free program will be held in the Community Room.

 

Kid's Book Club
Tuesday, July 25th at 2:00 p.m.

The Library will host the final Kid's Book Club of the summer on Tuesday. The club is geared for children who are going into grades 1-3. This week we’ll be reading The Boxcar Children: The Castle Mystery by Gertrude Chandler Warner. Children are invited to come discuss the books, participate in trivia, and enjoy snacks. Registration is required.


Build-a-Better Ice Cream Sundae
Wednesday, July 26th at 1:00 p.m.

Teens can celebrate summer with an ice cream party at the Library. Creativity is key when building a sundae, and prizes will be awarded for design, uniqueness, and overall presentation. Registration is required.  For ages 13-18.

 

Summer Science Clubs
Thursday, July 27th at 10:00 a.m. & 11:30 a.m.

On Thursday, July 27, 2017, the Summer Science Clubs for kids will meet at 10:00 a.m. (for 5-6 year olds) and 11:30 a.m. (for 7-8 year olds). Each week will feature a different science experiment. Both clubs will be held in the Storytime Room in the Children's Library. This is the last week of the Summer Science Clubs.

 

Tween Science Lab
Thursday, July 27th at 2:00 p.m.

The Boyle County Public Library offers a monthly STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) lab for tweens where they can try out a different experiment each month. On Thursday, participants will be building Suspension Bridges. Tweens (ages 9-13) interested in attending may register for the program by signing up in the Children's Library.

 

Jane in July Film Series (Week 4)
Thursday, July 27th at 6:30 p.m.

The "Jane in July" Film Series wraps up this Thursday evening in the Community Room at the Library. This week we'll be showing Becoming Jane. This film from 2007 is a charming biographical portrait of Jane Austen and her family, portraying her romance with a young Irishman as she begins to write her novels.

 

Computer Classes

In the ongoing effort to promote lifelong learning, the Library offers a wide variety of free computer classes every month.

Intro. to Microsoft Word on Tuesday, July 25 at 11:00 a.m.

Intro. to Microsoft PowerPoint on Thursday, July 27 at 11:00 a.m.

Intro. to Microsoft Excel on Friday, July 28 at 11:00 a.m. 

A complete listing of monthly computer classes can be found on the Library’s website. Those interested in attending any of the classes may register online or by calling the Library. In addition to these classes, one-on-one computer support is also available by appointment.


Build Your Family Tree: 1-on-1 Genealogy Sessions

The Library offers 1-on-1 genealogy sessions year-round. Those interested in learning more about their personal family history can work with one of the Library’s reference librarians to fill out a basic family tree, then learn how to use Ancestry.com and similar resources to continue the search.  To arrange a personal session, call the Library or email Jamie Helle at jhelle@boylepublib.org for more information.

Jane in July: Book Discussion of Pride and Prejudice
Sunday, July 16th at 3:00 p.m.

On Sunday the Library will host a book discussion of Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. This event will be led by Helen Emmitt and John Kinkade, English professors from Centre College. All are invited to participate in the discussion. Multiple copies of the book are available at the Library's circulation desk.

"Jane in July" brochures, which offer detailed information about each event, are available at the Library and online.


Tween Advisory Group (TAG)
Monday, July 17th at 2:00 p.m.

Tween Advisory Group will meet on Monday afternoon. TAG provides a way for tweens to have fun while volunteering their time at the library. For more information about tween programs, see Ms. Logan Anderson in the Children’s Library. For ages 9-13.

 

Cardboard Box Fort Challenge
Tuesday, July 18th at 1:00 p.m.

Teens can test their engineering design abilities when creating mammoth forts out of cardboard boxes. Following construction, the forts will be demolished in a water balloon battle. This event will be held in the Library Park, weather permitting. For ages 13-18.

 

Kid's Book Club
Tuesday, July 18th at 2:00 p.m.

The Kid's Book Club meets weekly during the summer on Tuesdays at 2:00 p.m. for children who are going into grades 1-3. Each week we’ll read a different book from one of our favorite series. This week we'll be reading Encyclopedia Brown: Super Sleuth by Donald J. Sobol. Children are invited to come discuss the books, participate in trivia, and enjoy snacks. Registration is required.


Ronald McDonald
Wednesday, July 19th at 10:30 a.m.

On Wednesday morning the iconic clown, Ronald McDonald, will entertain his fans with a silly performance about reading. This popular program is open to all ages and will be held in the Community Room. Due to limited seating, this will be a ticketed event. Tickets are free and will be given out 30 minutes prior to the start of the show.

 

Summer Science Clubs
Thursday, July 20th at 10:00 a.m. & 11:30 a.m.

The Summer Science Clubs for kids will meet at 10:00 a.m. (for 5-6 year olds) and 11:30 a.m. (for 7-8 year olds). Each week will feature a different science experiment. Both clubs will be held in the Storytime Room in the Children’s Library.

 

Third Thursday Book Discussion Groups
Thursday, July 20th at 10:00 a.m. & 6:30 p.m.

The Boyle County Public Library offers a variety of book discussion groups each month, including the Third Thursday Morning and Evening Book Discussion Groups. These groups are designed for anyone interested in discussing a wide variety of books in a group setting.

Both groups will meet on Thursday, July 20th. The Morning Discussion group, which is led by Diana Draper, will discuss Guarded by Angela Correll. The Evening Discussion group is led by Stephanie Donovan and will discuss Can’t Wait to Get to Heaven by Fannie Flagg. Those interested in participating in either group may pick up a copy of the book at the Circulation Desk in the Library.

 

Tween Event: Giant Jenga Poetry
Thursday, July 20th at 2:00 p.m.

The Library will host "Giant Jenga Poetry" on Thursday afternoon. Tweens will have a chance to stack life-sized Jenga poetry blocks, constructing funny, original poems while competing to see whose team can build the tallest Jenga tower. For ages 9-13.

 

Jane in July Film Series (Week 3)
Thursday, July 20th at 6:30 p.m.

As part of the "Jane in July" celebration, the Library is hosting a 4-week film series featuring film adaptations of some of some of Jane Austen's most well-known works. Films will be shown on Thursday evenings at 6:30 p.m. in the Community Room at the Library through the end of July.

This week we'll be showing Emma, a film from 1996 that tells the story of a mischievous young woman who tries to play matchmaker with others' lives (with disastrous results) before she herself falls in love.

Coloring and Conversation
Thursday, July 13th at 6:00 p.m.

The Library will host a coloring club for adults on Thursday, July 13th at 6:00 p.m. Many adults have rediscovered the joys of coloring as a way to relax and combat stress. The club, which is done in partnership with the Boyle County Cooperative Extension office, meets on the second Monday of the month in the Mahan Gallery.

 

Jane in July Film Series (Week 2)
Thursday, July 13th at 6:30 p.m.

The "Jane in July" Film Series continues this Thursday, July 13th at 6:30 p.m. in the Community Room at the Library. The series will run through the end of the month. A complete listing of the films can be found on the Library's website. In this week's film from 2005, sparks fly when spirited Elizabeth Bennet meets single, rich, and proud Mr. Darcy. As they fall in love, can both overcome their pride and their prejudice?

 

Bricks 4 Kidz
Friday, July 14th at 2:00 p.m.

As part of the Summer Reading program, Bricks 4 Kidz® will visit the Library on Friday, July 14th at 2:00 p.m., where participants will be able to build motorized LEGO® creations. Registration is required for this event. Those interested in attending may call or stop by the Children’s Library to register.

The Computer Help Desk Assistant is responsible for monitoring the adult public computer area; general monitoring of the audio-visual collection area; and providing basic assistance to patrons as needed with Office Suite applications, Internet browsing, and social networking applications.
