The Boyle County Public Library is excited to announce the sixth and final week of The Big Read "Unpuzzling Poe" events to be held at the Library and in the community.

Literary Society Re-enactment

On Tuesday, October 27th at 6:30 pm, a Literary Society Re-enactment will be held in Jacobs Hall at the Kentucky School for the Deaf in Danville. This program will consist of a presentation on literary societies as they took place in Jacobs Hall in the 19th century. Additionally, a dramatic reading and discussion of an excerpt of The Black Cat by Edgar Allan Poe will take place, and KSD student artwork will be on display.  Refreshments will be served. This is a free, ticketed event limited to 50 guests. Tickets may be picked up at the Library one week prior to the event.

Betrayal, Booze, and a Burial

On Wednesday, October 28th from 6:30 – 8:30 pm, Jane Barleycorn’s Market and Bar on Fourth Street in Danville will host a sherry pairing event for Unpuzzling Poe. Begin the evening with a pairing of Amontillado sherry and an appetizer for $20. At 7:30 pm, enjoy a dramatic enactment of The Cask of Amontillado and a discussion of revenge, death, torture, doppelgangers, and Amontillado! Additional cocktails or dinner options are available for purchase.

Friends of the Library Fall Film Series

The Friends of the Library Edgar Allan Poe Fall Film Series wraps up on Thursday, October 29th at 7:00 pm in the Community Room at the Boyle County Public Library. The final film in the series is a 1963 horror film that has little to do with Poe and more to do with a bizarre tale about birds of all kinds that begin to attack people in increasing numbers and viciousness. The film will be introduced by Charles Vahlkamp, professor emeritus at Centre College, and will be followed by a discussion about the film. There is no charge for admission, and free popcorn will be available. Runtime is 119 minutes.

Poe Spirit Stroll at Shaker Village

On Friday, October 30th at 8:00 pm, a Poe Spirit Stroll will be offered at Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill in Harrodsburg. The stroll will move through the historic Meeting House hearing excerpts from Poe's writing. Guests will be climbing stairs and ladders to enter some very special places inspired by Poe's works. (This is a special Poe-themed Spirit Stroll in addition to the other events and activities offered at Shaker Village that evening.) The cost for this event is $15 per person, with tickets available for purchase at Shaker Village.  For more information or to order tickets, call 1.800.734.5611 or visit www.shakervillageky.org/events.

Forkland Halloween Carnival

On Saturday, October 31st from 6:00-9:00 pm, the Forkland Halloween Carnival at the Forkland Community Center in Gravel Switch will also serve as the final event of The Big Read. This event, which features an evening of good old-fashioned fun for the whole family, gives a nod to Edgar Allan Poe, author of spooky tales and poems. The cost for this event is $2.00 for adults and $1.00 for children under 18.

For more information on any of these events, please contact Maggie Myers at the Library.
