Storytime Break

There will be no storytimes offered at the Library July 31 through August 8. Toddler and Preschool storytimes will resume at the Boyle County Public Library on August 14, 2018 after the two-week hiatus. Homeschool Storytime will resume in September.


Wild Earth: safariLIVE!
Tuesday,  July 31st from 9:00 a.m. to Noon

On Tuesday morning from 9:00 a.m. to noon, the Library will host Wild Earth: safariLIVE, an award-winning, expert-hosted live sunset safari broadcast directly from the wilderness in South Africa and Kenya. The unscripted show allows viewers to interact with an expert game ranger in real time while looking for leopards, lions, and cheetahs. Due to the length of the program, those planning to attend are welcome to bring drinks and snacks to enjoy while watching the safari.  

 

City of Danville Community Blood Drive
Wednesday, August 1st from 10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

A blood drive will be held at the Library on Wednesday, August 1 from 10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Those interested in donating may schedule an appointment online at kybloodcenter.org or by calling 800-775-2522. Walk-ins are also welcome.

 

Soul of 2nd Street History Conference
Friday, August 3rd from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m.

On Friday afternoon from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m., the Library will host the Soul of 2nd Street History Conference. The conference will provide an opportunity to learn about local African-American history. This year the theme is local sports heroes, legends, and icons.Speakers include Eugene Johnson, Gordon Benning, Billy Reed, Mike Denis, Johnny Raines, and Mary A. Sleet. Light refreshments and history exhibits open at 2:00 p.m. Conference begins at 3:00 p.m.

This free event is sponsored by the Danville-Boyle County African American Historical Society, Boyle County Public Library, and the Heart of Danville. The conference will be held in the Community Room at the Library.

The Soul of 2nd Street Festival continues on Saturday, August 4 from 2:00 to 10:00 p.m. at Constitution Square.

 

LEGO Club
Friday, August 3rd at 4:00 p.m.

The Library will host LEGO Club on Friday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. in the Storytime Room. The finished LEGO creations will be placed on display in the Library.

Tween Summer Book Club
Monday, July 23rd at 2:00 p.m.

The Library offers a monthly summer book club for tweens (ages 9-13). On Monday afternoon at 2:00 p.m., the group will discuss Mary Poppins by P.L. Travers. Snacks will be available. Any tweens interested in attending may register for the program by signing up in the Children’s Library.

 

Mindfulness Mondays: Mini Zen Garden
Monday, July 23rd at 6:30 p.m.

Once a month, the Library provides a quiet space in the Mahan Gallery for anyone wanting to practice meditation and mindfulness. This monthly series combines crafting and mindfulness education.  On Monday evening at 6:30 p.m., Santosh David Smith will lead participants in making Mini Zen Gardens. They will learn how to craft a miniature rock garden to take home, as well as how to use it to help promote calm and mindfulness.

 

Broadway Musicals Costume Party
Thursday, July 26th at 4:00 p.m.

On Thursday afternoon at 4:00 p.m., the Library will host a Broadway Musicals themed costume party for tweens. Celebrate summer with a costume bash filled with games, trivia, and snacks inspired by Broadway musicals. Those attending can either wear a costume to the event or make their own costume accessories at the party. For ages 9-13.

 

History Café: Beta Test of a History Crate
Thursday, July 26th at 6:00 p.m.

On Thursday evening at 6:00 p.m., the Library will host the History Café. This monthly event provides a place where people can gather and chat about local history.

This month will feature an examination of history through objects with a beta test of a History Crate. The crate contains educational materials and objects from the local area. It has been developed to teach technology, history, and how to look at objects to grade school children.

While the crate is designed for a younger audience, it still needs to be tested before making it available to them. All are invited to take part in a fun evening of examining our local history. The History Crate is made possible by a grant from the Hudson-Ellis Fund.

 

Mammoth Cave: "Rocks, Fossils, and Other Cool Stuff"
Friday, July 27th at 12:30 p.m.

(Ages 7-13)

On Friday, July 27 the Library will host two sessions of "Rocks, Fossils, and Other Cool Stuff." The first session begins at 12:30 p.m. and is for children in preschool through 1st grade. The second session begins at 2:00 p.m. and is for students in grades 2 - 6.

In both sessions, "campers" will be introduced to Park Ranger Jennifer Shackelford via webcam and will learn interesting scientific and historical facts about Mammoth Cave National Park. They will be able to touch rocks and fossils from the Mammoth Cave area and learn about why Kentucky has the world’s longest cave. Participants will also be able to "ask a Ranger" questions during these live interactive sessions.

This program is sponsored by the McDowell House Museum.

DIY Guitars for Tweens
Monday, July 16th at 2:00 p.m. 

The Library will host DIY Guitars on Monday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. Tweens will be able to build and decorate guitars out of recycled materials. This program is for ages 9-13 and will be held in the Storytime Room.

 

Teen Gaming @BCPL
Tuesday, July 17th at 4:00 p.m. 

On Tuesday afternoon at 4:00 p.m., the Library will host Teen Gaming, featuring video games and snacks. This program will be held in the Community Room and is for ages 13-18.

 

Jazz Scat Singing
Wednesday, July 18th at 4:00 p.m. 

Scat? What’s that? The Library’s summer musical events continue on Wednesday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. with “Jazz Scat Singing with Lydia Ellis.” Find out how jazz “scat singing” began, listen to examples, and try to scat sing. This event will be held in the Community Room. All ages are welcome to attend.


Musical Petting Zoo with Lafferty Pike Band
Thursday, July 19th at 10:30 a.m. 

On Thursday morning at 10:30 a.m. the Library will host the Lafferty Pike Band. This all-female bluegrass band will perform an upbeat short performance of bluegrass songs, then share their love of music with young audience members by inviting them to try out the different instruments. Band members play fiddle, mandolin, banjo, guitar, and upright bass. All ages are welcome to attend. Due to limited seating, this will be a ticketed performance. The tickets are free and will be given out 30 minutes prior to the start of the show.

 

Third Thursday Book Discussion Groups
Thursday, July 19th at 10:00 a.m. & 4:00 p.m. 

The Third Thursday Morning and Afternoon Book Discussion Groups will meet on Thursday, July 19 at 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., respectively. These groups are designed for anyone interested in discussing a wide variety of books in a group setting.

This month the Morning Discussion group will discuss The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon. The Afternoon Discussion group will discuss Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee. Those interested in participating in either group may pick up a copy of the book at the Circulation Desk in the Library.  


Heat Sensitive Slime
Thursday, July 19th at 4:00 p.m. 

The Library will host a STEM event on Thursday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. Tweens can make slime with an added special ingredient which makes the slime change colors as it reacts to heat. For ages 9-13.

 

ASL Conversation Group
Thursday, July 19th at 6:00 p.m. 

The Library will host American Sign Language Conversation Group on Thursday evening at 6:00 p.m. This monthly event is community led and provides a casual location where people can practice using ASL. All levels of ASL learners or users are encouraged to participate. For more information, contact Caleb Conover at the Library.

 

Frozen Sing Along
Friday, July 20th at 2:00 p.m. 

Families are invited to a movie sing along on Friday, July 20 at 2:00 p.m. in the Community Room at the Library. The featured movie is Frozen, a beloved animated Disney film about two sisters trying to break the icy spell that keeps their kingdom trapped in winter. All ages are welcome to attend this free event. (2013; Rated PG; 102 minutes)

 

Shaker Community: Song & Dance
Saturday, July 21st at 2:00 p.m. 

Music and dance were a vital part of the Shaker style of worship. On Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m., the Library will host Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill. Holly Wood will present “Shaker Community: Song and Dance,” where participants will learn Shaker songs and have the opportunity to try a simple Shaker dance. This program will be held in the Community Room at the Library.

This Week at the Library: July 9-14, 2018

The Library offers many fun, educational events throughout the year. Weekly programs include Adult Storytime on Mondays at 9:00 a.m., Crafters Who Care on Mondays at 6:00 p.m., and Storytimes on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. This summer also offers Baby Lapsit, Yoga for Kids, and ukulele lessons on Mondays, the Kid’s Book Club on Tuesdays at 2:00 p.m. and Kid’s Science Clubs on Thursday mornings. In addition to these weekly events, the following Library-sponsored programs are scheduled for this week:


Lip Sync & Karaoke
Monday, July 9th at 2:00 p.m.

The Library will host a Lip Sync & Karaoke party on Monday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. Youth are invited to sing along with their favorite songs or challenge others to a lip sync battle. For ages 9-18.

 

 Second Monday Book Discussion Group
Monday, July 9th at 3:00 p.m.

The Second Monday Book Discussion Group meets on the second Monday of the month at 3:00 p.m. in the Mahan House at the Library. Selections include fiction and historical fiction books set in locations around the world. On Monday, July 9, the group will discuss 2 A.M at the Cat’s Pajamas by Marie-Helene Bertino. Those interested in participating may pick up a copy of the book at the Circulation Desk in the Library.


Mahan Gallery Art Reception
Monday, July 9th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

On Monday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., the Library will host a reception for "The Art of Jeanne Penn Lane" art exhibit. The exhibit, which is on display through July 16, features works of a variety of media created by the late Jeanne Penn Lane, including an example of a plaster technique developed by the artist. Light refreshments will be available.

 

 Living Arts & Science Center presents
"Rockin' Out: The Art & Science of Sound"
Tuesday, July 10th at 10:30 a.m.

On Tuesday morning at 10:30 a.m., the Living Arts & Science Center when they bring their program "Rockin’ Out: The Art & Science of Sound" to the Library. Participants will experiment with a variety of hands-on discoveries, such as making water jump with a tuning fork, using sound to blow out a candle, and play a variety of instruments. They’ll also learn how music can be used as creative inspiration as they make art to the beat of various styles of music. This event will be held in the Community Room. Due to limited seating, this will be a ticketed performance. The tickets are free and will be given out 30 minutes prior to the start of the show.

 

Dance Class: Beginning Ballet
Thursday, July 12th at 4:00 p.m.

The Library will host a beginning ballet class on Thursday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. in the Community Room. Led by instructor Michaela Stone, participants will learn the beginning steps of ballet. For ages 9-18. 

 

Coloring & Conversation
Thursday, July 12th at 6:00 p.m.

The Library will host a coloring club for adults on Thursday evening at 6:00 p.m. Many adults have rediscovered the joys of coloring as a way to relax and combat stress. The club, which is done in partnership with the Boyle County Cooperative Extension office, meets on the second Thursday of the month in the Mahan Gallery.

 

Musical Movie Night: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
Thursday, July 12th at 7:00 p.m.

As part of the Summer Reading Program, on select Thursdays the Library will host musical movie nights featuring popular musicals. On Thursday, July 12 at 7:00 p.m., the Library will show Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, a film from 1968 about an eccentric inventor who turns a broken down car into a fancy vehicle to go off on a magical fantasy adventure with his children. (Rated G; 144 minutes)


Blue Groove Jazz Performance
Friday, July 13th at 7:00 p.m.

The Library will continue with its summer music series on Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. when they host Blue Groove Jazz, a classic jazz ensemble from Central Kentucky. This free event will be held in the Library Park. Those planning to attend should bring a lawn chair to enjoy the show. (In the event of rain, the performance will be held in the Library Lobby.)

 

Upcycle Your Photographic Slides
Saturday, July 14th at 2:00 p.m.

As part of the Memory Lab program series, the Library will offer an opportunity to upcycle old photographic slides on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. Participants will bring their old photographic slides, sort through their collections, and find the slides they want to keep. The remaining slides will be upcycled to make crafts such as mobiles, slide curtains, and lampshades. Call the Library to register for this event.
