Friends of the Library
The Friends of the Library began in 1979 when Mrs. Anabel Girard, Mrs. Corinne Rich and Dr. Frank Heck formed the group to provide support and auxiliary services for the Library. The Friends has since assumed responsibility for organizing used book sales, planning noon-hour programs, initiating film and book discussion groups, publishing a newsletter, selling book bags and note cards, and assisting the staff with displays for special events.

The group has helped with fund-raising since its formation and in the recent “Campaign for the Library” became a member of the Benjamin Franklin Circle at the “Trustees” level.  Before contributing to the Campaign for the Library,  the Friends purchased AV equipment, special shelving, furnishings for the children’s library, encyclopedias, audio tapes, and other library materials with revenues from book sales and members’ dues. Anyone who contributes at least $10 annually becomes a “Friend."

The Friends hold its Annual Meeting and Tea in January.  That event in 2008 combined with an Open House for the temporary library and a program by prize-winning playwright Elizabeth Orndorff about the International Mystery Festival.

Erma J. Bush, a speaker from the Kentucky Chautauqua Series, will portray
“Miss Dinnie Thompson: No Ordinary
Woman.”
Dinnie Thompson became a freed woman after being a slave in the Speed Family household in Louisville. She became a representative of African-American Kentucky women who worked to make a living in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
For 26 years, she worked at Louisville’s
Neighborhood House, which helped European immigrants adapt to American life.
Now you can exchange ideas easily with friends of other libraries in Kentucky.
The Kentucky Department of Libraries and Archives is sponsoring an online discussion group for members of any Friends organization in the state. Go to http://listserv.ky.gov/read/all_forums to subscribe.
