This Week at the Library: July 23-29, 2017

The Library offers many fun, educational events throughout the year. Weekly programs include a Summer Coding Club on Mondays at 4:00 p.m., Crafters Who Care on Mondays at 6:00 p.m., and Storytimes on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. In addition to these weekly events, the following Library-sponsored programs are scheduled for this week:

Adult How-To Workshop: Canning Basics
Monday, July 24th at 6:00 p.m.

The Library offers a monthly "How-To" program series for adults where participants can explore the information and skills needed for a new hobby or activity, guided by a local expert. On Monday, the Library will host "Canning Basics," presented by Alethea Price, Family and Consumer Science Extension Agent for Boyle County. Workshop participants will learn the basics of both water bath canning and pressure cooker canning. This free program will be held in the Community Room.


Kid's Book Club
Tuesday, July 25th at 2:00 p.m.

The Library will host the final Kid's Book Club of the summer on Tuesday. The club is geared for children who are going into grades 1-3. This week we’ll be reading The Boxcar Children: The Castle Mystery by Gertrude Chandler Warner. Children are invited to come discuss the books, participate in trivia, and enjoy snacks. Registration is required.

Build-a-Better Ice Cream Sundae
Wednesday, July 26th at 1:00 p.m.

Teens can celebrate summer with an ice cream party at the Library. Creativity is key when building a sundae, and prizes will be awarded for design, uniqueness, and overall presentation. Registration is required.  For ages 13-18.


Summer Science Clubs
Thursday, July 27th at 10:00 a.m. & 11:30 a.m.

On Thursday, July 27, 2017, the Summer Science Clubs for kids will meet at 10:00 a.m. (for 5-6 year olds) and 11:30 a.m. (for 7-8 year olds). Each week will feature a different science experiment. Both clubs will be held in the Storytime Room in the Children's Library. This is the last week of the Summer Science Clubs.


Tween Science Lab
Thursday, July 27th at 2:00 p.m.

The Boyle County Public Library offers a monthly STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) lab for tweens where they can try out a different experiment each month. On Thursday, participants will be building Suspension Bridges. Tweens (ages 9-13) interested in attending may register for the program by signing up in the Children's Library.


Jane in July Film Series (Week 4)
Thursday, July 27th at 6:30 p.m.

The "Jane in July" Film Series wraps up this Thursday evening in the Community Room at the Library. This week we'll be showing Becoming Jane. This film from 2007 is a charming biographical portrait of Jane Austen and her family, portraying her romance with a young Irishman as she begins to write her novels.


Computer Classes

In the ongoing effort to promote lifelong learning, the Library offers a wide variety of free computer classes every month.

Intro. to Microsoft Word on Tuesday, July 25 at 11:00 a.m.

Intro. to Microsoft PowerPoint on Thursday, July 27 at 11:00 a.m.

Intro. to Microsoft Excel on Friday, July 28 at 11:00 a.m. 

A complete listing of monthly computer classes can be found on the Library’s website. Those interested in attending any of the classes may register online or by calling the Library. In addition to these classes, one-on-one computer support is also available by appointment.

Build Your Family Tree: 1-on-1 Genealogy Sessions

The Library offers 1-on-1 genealogy sessions year-round. Those interested in learning more about their personal family history can work with one of the Library’s reference librarians to fill out a basic family tree, then learn how to use and similar resources to continue the search.  To arrange a personal session, call the Library or email Jamie Helle at for more information.
