Library to Celebrate Día

April 26, 2016

As the nation's population continues to become more diverse, the Boyle County Public Library will join libraries across the country in celebration of El día de los niños/El día de los libros (Children's Day/Book Day), also known as Día. Día is a celebration of children, families, and reading. The celebration emphasizes the importance of advocating literacy for children of all linguistic and cultural backgrounds.

The Library's Día celebration will be held on Thursday, April 28th at 6:30 pm in the Children's Storytime Room at the Library. Families will have the opportunity to hear a story told in two languages, try new foods, and participate in fun activities. In addition, all children at Día will be given a free picture book to take home.

Día is an enhancement of Children's Day, which began in 1925. Children's Day was designated as a day to bring attention to the importance and well-being of children. In 1996, nationally acclaimed children's book author Pat Mora proposed linking the celebration of childhood and children with literacy to found El día de los niños/El día de los libros.
