The Boyle County Public Library will launch its Big Read program in celebration of Edgar Allan Poe with a Kick-Off Party at the Library on Sunday, September 20th from 2:00-6:00 pm. The Big Read in Danville-Boyle County is presented in partnership with: the Arts Commission of Danville/Boyle County; the Community Arts Center; Concerned Citizens for Human Relations; Elmwood Inn Fine Teas; Friends of the Library; Forkland Community Center; The Hub; Jacobs Hall-Kentucky School for the Deaf; Jane Barleycorn's; Main Street Perryville; Old Crow Inn; Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill; Warrenwood Manor; and West T. Hill Community Theater.
The kick-off event will feature a variety of activities include a dramatic reading of "The Bells," a book give-away, a Poe-themed photo booth, an art activity for children, and a Bell Choir performance by Lexington Avenue Baptist Church.
A program of the National Endowment for the Arts, The Big Read broadens our understanding of our world, our communities, and ourselves through the joy of sharing a good book. Managed by Arts Midwest, this initiative offers grants to support innovative community reading programs designed around a single book. Danville is one of 75 communities nationwide participating in The Big Read from September 2015-June 2016. From September 20-October 31, our community will celebrate Edgar Allan Poe with a full calendar of "Unpuzzling Poe" events including a Mock Trial at West T. Hill Community Theatre; a Poe-inspired film series; an Afternoon Tea at Warrenwood Manor; a dramatic performance by Helen McKenna Uff; dramatic readings at the Forkland Festival and many locations throughout the community; and a Poe Spirit Stroll at Shaker Village.
